Life's Even Cheaper Than It Used To Be

Wanna kill someone and get away with it? This 19-year-old found the magic way to do that: find a lenient judge. This happened pretty close to my home, on a stretch of road I drive on every day: The dude, coming down a steep hill on a major road, floored it, brought his speed up over 90 mph, lost control, careened off the road, slammed into a pedestrian and a wall, and killed the pedestrian. Not only was he not remorseful, he told a friend that he'd at least get another car in college. The prosecutors wanted to go for the maximum they could get, a 4 year sentence, no plea bargain. The judge didn't bother asking them; he gave the dude probation and 364 days in county, or in city jail if the defendant pays for the cushier surroundings. Why 364 days? Because the driver is not a U.S. citizen -- he's from South Korea -- and 365 days would have made him automatically deportable. How can that judge face the dead man's family? How can he sleep at night? (Daily Breeze, Torrance)
