MGM Resorts built a brand-new 26-story hotel on the Las Vegas Strip, the Harmon Hotel, part of the new City Center project. Then the place was found to have serious construction defects and might not hold up in an earthquake, or at least that's what MGM says. And now, MGM is asking for permission from the county to demolish the $279 million building. The contractor objects, saying that the building is safe. Imagine a $279 million building sitting empty and unused, and facing demolition. And, meanwhile, within walking distance, there are people with no home. (Las Vegas Sun's Vegas Inc.)
