How times change: Newark wanted to attract pro sports. They succeeded with hockey at the Rock, but for secondary sports, they had a choice a few years ago, minor league baseball or pro soccer. They bet on the traditional one. They lost. The independent minor league park downtown is empty on most nights, with crowds under 100. Meanwhile, the soccer stadium was built across the river in Harrison, and draws big crowds. That wouldn't necessarily happen everywhere, but demographic shifts seem to be making soccer a better bet for cities these days. (New York Times)
