Reporting Live From... Oh, Come On, Does It Matter Where I Am Right Now?
-
Three staffers at Australia's Nine Network have been fired over an incident in which helicopter reports that were said to be over the search for a missing boy turned out to be from the station's studio site instead. Yes, they said the reporters were live on the scene when, instead, they were circling their own building or on the helipad. Outrageous! On the other hand, does it matter whether there's a reporter over the scene of the story? Let's put it this way: We all laugh when some reporter's doing a standup in front of a place where news happened hours earlier, and we say, well, what's the point of the reporter being there when nothing's happening? No, you can't condone deception, but was it necessary for the reporter to be in the air over the scene of the search at that moment? What could he say from there that he couldn't say from the studio? Apparently, nothing. (Sydney Morning Herald)
