Most schools are content to use the minimum state academic guidelines to qualify kids to play sports. Some schools in New Jersey, like, in this case, in Teaneck, are raising the bar, requiring a B- or C+ average. And that raises the issue of whether it's fair to do that, considering that playing ball might be a poor student's only chance of getting into college or making it in the world. Are school sports a privilege to be reserved for only the academically adequate or a right? (Bergen Record)
