Should history be sanitized? That's the topic arising from the controversy over a reissue of the comic "Tintin in the Congo," a 1930s edition of the beloved Belgian cartoon that contains what we now consider racist stereotypes. But the controversy in England isn't necessarily about the content, it's about the fact that the publisher is issuing the book in shrinkwrap with warning stickers, which the Campaign for Real Education says is going too far. They feel that children don't need to be protected from the material, as long as they understand times have changed. Is it political correctness or common sense? (This reminds me of how Warner Bros. cartoons were edited for racial insensitivity when I was a kid; the versions that aired on New York television stations edited the racial stuff out, but the versions on Philadelphia television left some of it in, which confused the hell out of me) (Daily Telegraph)
