About one of every seven criminal cases in New York City, about 50,000 a year, are for low-level pot possession. Why? Is that what the police and courts should be dealing with? It's expensive, it's ineffective, and the best that the police can do to justify it is that they think people who possess pot are likely to be criminals in other ways, although there is no evidence to support this.
