Governor, We Salute You... With One Extended Finger
-
This teen who posted a rude tweet about Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback and now won't apologize, why, she's... she's... American, that's what she is. You know, I have had it up to here with the idea that we're always supposed to be all polite and deferential to politicians. Why? What makes a Senator or Congressman or Governor special? They indeed are supposed to be public servants, not the elite. And they are, I've learned by dealing with many of them over the years, nothing special. Some -- sadly, most -- are considerably dumber or more venal than average. Certainly, Brownback's reaction indicates that he's thin-skinned and utterly deficient in public relations, or a sense of humor about himself. And here's a tip for talk show hosts who might disagree: If you think people should always be deferential to politicians, especially politicians with whom you agree, you are in the wrong business. Your job is to entertain, and to challenge those in power and make sure they do right by your listeners. You don't need to be rude, but sometimes it's proper to tell these guys off and to ask tough questions and point out when the emperor's naked. That goes double for those on "your side" -- if you don't keep them honest, nobody will. If you think we all need to be polite and "yes, sir" and without dissent, you should go into public relations, not talk radio. (Kansas City Star) UPDATE: He apologized in writing. Now, was that so traumatic?
