The mantra for a lot of people in the tech industry, and now in all industries, is "open source" -- the idea is that you allow anyone to use your product for free, and others add improvements that make your product better. And you make money by... um... you make money by... well, it turns out that open source doesn't make money. Worse, by offering free equivalents for paid products, it depresses the value of the paid products. It's what's missing when guys like Chris Anderson go around preaching the gospel of "free" -- they say you make money in other ways, but when you press them on what those "other ways" are, they don't really have an answer.
