Can't Speak Ill Of The Departed... At Least For A Couple Of Days
-
It's interesting that the coverage in the immediate wake of the death of celebrities who have quite publicly fallen into unfortunate behavior tends to avoid the messy parts. In the first couple of days after Whitney Houston's death, they only glancingly mentioned her drug use and that she'd fallen on hard times in recent years. Same for Michael Jackson, whose little personal peccadilloes are STILL not mentioned when he's being lionized, and Amy Winehouse, who got more recognition of her "troubles" but still got better press in death than she did in life. Is that just common courtesy or avoiding the truth? Why do we feel free to make jokes about someone's drug addiction or possible pedophilia when they're alive, but when they die, saying anything is like farting in church? (The Wrap)
