Hipster Backlash: At SXSW ("what, you went to SXSW? How 2010"), a marketing company turned homeless people into Wi-Fi hot spots and sent them out onto the streets of Austin with t-shirts soliciting people to text their names to a short code number for access. The homeless people were paid a big $20 per day plus whatever donations they could get. And the folks milling about at the conference were suitably appalled, as well they should be. The homeless people, on the other hand, seemed to like getting any money at all, so there's that. (New York Times)
