Okay, We're Aware. Now What?
-
The Sioux City Journal devoted its entire Sunday front page to fighting bullying, with pleas to the community to be "pro-active" in stopping bullying. Okay, then, here's the question for which nobody seems to offer an answer: What do we DO about bullying? It's existed forever (probably as far back as human society goes), and, well, what can you do? Tell the cops? What constitutes bullying? Does disagreement necessarily mean bullying? Does having a strong dislike of another person always mean bullying? What if it's a justifiable animus? Who makes the call on what's bullying and what's not? What if a kid feels bullied but is oversensitive and perceiving something that isn't really there? I'm not trying to defend bullying -- I got my ass kicked on a regular basis in elementary school by bullies -- but is there really anything that society can do? Are we just making ourselves feel better by promoting "awareness" of a problem of which we're already aware and about which we can't do a thing? (Fox News)
