What'll Be Extinct First, The Cartoons Or The Papers?
-
On the very, very endangered list: the newspaper sports cartoon. If you're younger than, say, 45, you may not remember that practically every newspaper had a sports cartoonist back in the day, usually doing a "high school athlete of the week" panel but sometimes doing sports editorial commentary as well. Some -- Bill Gallo and Willard Mullin in New York, Karl Hubenthal in L.A., Murray Olderman nationally -- were very familiar to millions. Now, there are a handful, most papers don't bother, and it's the end of a very long era. (New York Times)
