Tonight, Eat A Knish In His Honor
-
Dead: Fred Hakim. Who? Owner of the last of the seedy Times Square lunch counters, who fought and fought against eviction when the city "cleaned up" the area in the late '90s. His was an old-style hot-dog-and-knish place, there since 1941. But the amazing part isn't how it was a holdout from the old days. It's this: less than six weeks after the eviction, the building collapsed, most likely due to a combination of renovation work next door and winds. Had he not been evicted, he'd have been in that building when rubble crushed it. Getting evicted saved his life. (New York Times)
