The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles has revoked its approval of a former Army sergeant's vanity plates. The plates read "ICUHAJI," and the agency thinks that's an affront to Arabs. Apparently, service men sometimes derisively call Arabs "Hajis," which is new to me -- I though that was an Indian name, anyway. But the guy's appealing the ruling, and it's a speech vs. privilege thing, and whatever. I long for the days when every plate had a letter/number combination that meant nothing but identification, and when plates were easily identifiable by state from a long distance away -- beige and black for New Jersey, orange and blue for New York, blue and yellow for Pennsylvania. Get off my lawn! (Virginian-Pilot)
