Print, The End Is Nigh
-
Well, we now have the answer to which sizeable cities will be the first without a daily printed newspaper: the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the Birmingham News, the Mobile Press-Register, and the Huntsville TImes will go to a three-days-a-week schedule and will concentrate on their websites. It was a matter of time. Expect more of this. This is all based on the owner of the papers' experience in Ann Arbor, where they shut the daily paper down, launched an online "paper," and print editions twice a week. How much of a gamble is this? Consider that the Times-Picayune, which you might recall from its incredible coverage of Katrina and its aftermath, is, by measure of rate of readership in the market, one of the most successful papers in America, but all of the papers' circulations are way down. We know news is going online, but this is a leap of faith that the money to be made online will make up for losing the display ad and circulation revenue less production costs. (AP via CBS News)
