Aah, It Was Too Good To Be True

One of the most annoying things about the annoying Los Angeles International Airport is the lack of free Wi-Fi, prompted by an exclusive contract for T-Mobile to do it for a fee. But T-Mobile's getting out of that business, so the airport, wanting to avoid interruption of service, did a quick no-bid deal with another company, which planned to launch free Wi-Fi at LAX, just like the free Wi-Fi at many other cities' airports. And now the L.A. City Council has stopped that in its tracks, insisting that others get to bid. The problem: The higher bids are likely to be by companies planning to charge for Wi-Fi. So what seems like better government practice -- open bidding -- might screw the consumer in the end. (Daily Breeze)
