There Are Worse Places To Hide
-
Almost 30 years ago, this American airman decided that he didn't like Ronald Reagan's policies, and he deserted. Now, he's turned up, having established a secret life in Sweden. After he was denied a discharge for being a pacifist, he ran, got a fake name, met a woman, had 3 children, and worked for the Swedish government. and now, missing his family, he's revealed truth. His attorney says that it's unlikely he'll get deported or extradited, although it's probably not a good idea for him to return to the United States anytime soon. So, basically, he's gotten away with it. Topic here, I suppose, could also be whether there should be some accommodation for people in the military who change their minds about fighting. Sure, you know what you're signing up for when you do it, but people do change, and, unlike any other job, you can't quit. (New York Daily News)
