Before 'Thumbs Up' And '4 Stars'

Dead: Andrew Sarris, the most influential film critic of whom most people have never heard. He was the Village Voice critic who brought the auteur theory of movie criticism to America, specifically assigning the credit, or blame, for a movie entirely to the director, whose "vision" he assumed the movie was. That this discounts the influence of the script, the cinematographer, and the actors is another story. But he always wrote of movies as "(name of director)'s (title)," as in "Stanley Donen's 'Bedazzled'" or "Stanley Kubrick's 'Eyes Wide Shut.'" Or, for that matter, "Dennis Dugan's 'Jack and Jill.'" And that, for better or worse, is how many critics see the making of movies these days. (Entertainment Weekly)
