Everybody Loves Second Chances, Right?

Three students flunked a required course at a Los Angeles high school, and therefore weren't going to graduate. But someone let them go to another school for a few days, make up the class, and then come back and graduate just like everyone else who DID pass the course on time. Is that fair to the other students? Is that fair, period? Should there be an instant do-over without consequence? Should students know that, if they fail in regulation time, there'll always be a backup option? On the other hand, do you want to punish a kid in a way that might have consequences for life over something that can just as easily be handled this way? And is it significant that the three students all flunked courses from the same tough teacher and didn't have problems with any other course? (Los Angeles Times)
