A lifeguard saw someone in trouble in the water, in an area not within the permitted swimming area. He went and saved the swimmer anyway. And for that, he was fired. And when other lifeguards admitted that they'd have saved the swimmer, too, they were fired as well. See, the city doesn't want to assume liability for anyone not in covered areas, so they have that rule, and it's incontrovertible. So lifeguards are supposed to let people drown if they're not between the flags. Good to know. (ABC News)
