Spend 16 Bucks, Charge 9. Sounds Like A Plan
-
Government (or, in this case, quasi-government) screws everything up, and so it is that while food sales are profit centers for practically every other business, Amtrak is taking a financial bath on food and beverage sales. It lost $833.8 million in a decade, $84.5 million in 2011 alone. Here's why: overhead means they're spending way, way more to make the food than they get in return. How about a cheeseburger costing them $16.15 and a can of soda $3.40, but they charge $9.50 for the burger and $2 for the soda? And why isn't anyone asking WHY the costs are so high? If they can't bring costs under control, they probably should just put vending machines in and be done with... oh, wait, the unions want a word with me.... (USA Today)
