It's still amazing how people automatically assume that raising taxes will generate lots more money for the government after so many examples like this, where Los Angeles County and California's taxes on TV production have driven most of this Fall's hour-long drama shows to produce outside the county. 21 of the 23 new fall and midseason dramas will be shot in more tax-friendly places. That's huge for the county, the state, and the industry, because the hour-long shows, which take longer to shoot and do more location shots than comedies, are the financial underpinning of the county's entertainment economy, with bigger crews and bigger budgets. And it also means more unemployment for crew members. (Los Angeles Times)
