Facebook's purchase of Instagram was a combination of cash and stock, and it's the latter that's caused the valuation of the deal to plummet nearly $300 million. And let that be a lesson to everyone: NEVER take an important piece of any deal in stock. Not options, not stock. Treat stock and options as bonuses, but not as an essential part of your compensation. If it works out, fine, but don't rely on it. If the market doesn't get you, corporate failure will.
