When a nation or city spends millions to get the Olympics and billions to hold them, the public is sold on the idea that it'll be a financial boon in the long run. Ask U.K. retailers: Retail sales in the U.S. were down in August. People didn't shop while the Olympics were in London, and visitors probably didn't venture far past the Olympic Village. Every dollar spent on the Olympics probably just came from another segment of the local economy. On the bright side, the world got to see that the U.K. is tops at creating incoherent pop music pastiches for opening and closing ceremonies, or at least the world outside NBC territory got to see that.
