Prince Is Not Amused
-
Farmington, NM is in an uproar over a child's violin. Seriously. See, the 11-year-old girl wants to play her purple violin, a gift from her grandmother, in the school orchestra class. The school said no, that all violins have to be the same color. And now it's a full-bore controversy. Is an orchestra a "team" that needs to be uniform or should the school encourage individuality? In this case, I'd go with the latter; it's not the military, and as one of those creative types, I hate the idea that a kid's expression of her individuality would be sublimated because of a policy that really never existed before someone got a bug up his or her butt about this particular "violation." When the school argues, "doesn't your daughter want to be like everyone else?," the answer should be "no." And then you look for a new school. (Los Angeles Times)
