He was the consumer columnist for the Hartford Courant and he wrote a column critical of the practices of Sleepy's, a mattress retailer and major advertiser in the paper. And his position was "eliminated." He's suing. The paper created a new consumer columnist position that was more of a how-to-get-good-deals happy-talk column, and he says they didn't offer that to him. Here's the thing: In this era of lower ad revenues, can a newspaper stand by its journalists when they take on a big advertiser? Are the days of investigation over?
