What better way to deal with the deficit and the moribund economy than to call for more government spending? That's what some liberals want, including some in Congress and left-leaning columnists like the New York Times' Paul Krugman and the L.A. Times' Michael Hiltzik. But spending the nation's way out of a recession has never worked -- read Amity Shlaes' "The Forgotten Man" for how the New Deal prolonged the Great Depression -- so calling for more spending while ignoring the deficit seems pretty foolhardy. For their part, they point at Greece and the E.U. as examples of how excessive cutting is also a bad idea. So, what DO we do? (Los Angeles Times)
