'Hang The DJ, Hang The DJ, Hang The DJ....'

The Royal Prank Call/suicide story raises the question of whether the media, especially the British media, is overreacting and hyping the story to the point of advocating ruining the DJs' lives over what, when you actually hear the bit, was a stupid comedy bit that only escalated because a) the hospital staff screwed up and b) the nurse committed suicide, and it was blamed on the call before there was actual evidence to connect the two (she was not blamed for the incident by anyone, and was not named in any reporting about it before she killed herself). No defense for the lameness of the bit, but it was just a prank call that they couldn't have anticipated would have worked. Should they be treated as worthy of the death penalty?
