Better To Watch On TV Than Be In The Stands

So Jimmie Johnson won the Daytona 500, holding off Dale Jr. (Danica finished 8th), and you know about the crash in the Nationwide race and you've seen the fan video that showed the crash and the aftermath. There are the usual questions about safety to talk about, but I'm also interested in NASCAR's response, which was to issue a takedown notice for the video and to allegedly threaten an ESPN reporter with arrest if he didn't get out of the pit. It's natural, I suppose to circle the wagons when something bad happens, but to claim you're only concerned with the privacy of the injured... it's live and it's happening, essentially, in public and people want to know what's going on. It's news. You can't shut off the news, can you? (Deadspin; ESPN)
