If You Wouldn't Take It To Judge Judy, Don't Take It To A College Honor Board
-
The case of the University of North Carolina sophomore who accused a classmate of rape and ended up facing expulsion for allegedly violating the school's honor code for "disruptive or intimidating behavior" toward the alleged rapist is slightly complicated -- she chose to use the honor system instead of going to the police, lost her case, and then organized a protest over how the school handles rape cases,. And the latter is what led to her own possible expulsion, despite her never revealing her alleged attacker's name. But the overarching issue is how colleges treat rape cases, and they always do that poorly. There was a similar case at my school, and the system a) discouraged the victim from calling the cops, and b) botched the investigation and adjudication, and the guys basically walked. Parents, tell your daughters that if they, God forbid, are ever in this situation, call the cops immediately. Do not let the college handle it. The college has a vested interest in hushing it all up.
