We Get The Government We Deserve
-
It's still mind-boggling to realize that in Los Angeles, we were bombarded with ads for the candidates in the Mayoral race, and there are major issues that the new Mayor will have to face, so this was a fairly critical election, yet the turnout topped out at 21 percent of registered voters. 21 percent. 79 percent didn't bother. And that's how the city ends up with a runoff between two almost identical candidates, both of whom are Democratic establishment picks who bear a great deal of responsibility for the mess the city is in, and both of whom are beholden to public employee unions (deals with which are a large part of the city's financial troubles). The voters should be embarrassed, but they really don't care. (New York Times)
