Progress Has Its Price

You don't actually own ebooks and digital music. That's a huge change from the past, and it's anti-consumer, yet you let it happen by acquiescing to the way books and music are being sold digitally. You can't transfer the books to someone else, even if you're dead -- you die, your digital rights die with you. Some vendors, including Amazon, are trying to create exchange sites to let you trade books and music, but they'll charge for the privilege and the publishers and labels are not in favor of letting this happen. This all seems unfair, but that's how it is. (New York Times)
