Right To Know Vs. Right To Privacy

People have a lot of reasons for giving up a baby for adoption, but this woman's reason was pretty strong: She was raped and impregnated as a teenager. She gave up the child in a closed adoption. Over 30 years later, that child insisted on trying to establish a relationship with her, and someone at the adoption agency allegedly gave up the information, instantly bringing back all the bad thoughts the mom had tried to banish from her mind all those years. The mother has now, several years after that incident, written a book about it. Now, the daughter is an advocate for opening up adoption records. And it raises the question: Should a parent who gave up a child for adoption be forced against his or her will to deal with the child's desire to know who his or her parents are? Conversely, should a child be kept from knowing his or her family history? How do you balance these concerns? (New York Daily News)
