United and US Airways have jacked up the fee to change flights from $150 to $200, because they can. Seriously, it doesn't cost them more now to change a flight. In fact, you could argue that it doesn't cost them anything if they resell your seat, and since fares tend to rise as fewer seats are available closer to departure, they stand a good chance of clearing a profit with the difference of your old and new fares and the resale of the empty seat. They charge you because, well, they can, and they know it. (ABC News)
