That Being Said, I Still Want One Of Those Statues For My Front Yard
-
The much-anticipated revival of Bob's Big Boy in California has flopped so far, with many of the newly-revived diner chain's newer outlets already closed (the one near me closed last year). The iconic Burbank outlet with the car shows in the parking lot is surviving, as are eight others, but most have gone away. The interesting part is how the consultant says that they're learning that nostalgia in food is on the decline, which might be news to the competing Ruby's chain, which seems to be fine and doubles down on 1940s diner nostalgia. I don't think it was a failure of nostalgia, I think it was the quality of the food. The Torrance Bob's Big Boy was pretty lousy, even the burgers, closer to school cafeteria food than authentic 1950s burger joint. The big statue out front doesn't help if the food sucks.
