It's A Living, If You Lack Any Shame

You may have seen that list of the 50 worst charities in America, the ones who spend more on collecting money or for "administration" than for their stated purposes. One of the worst offenders is a network of charities controlled by one family, whose story is here; the people in charge, the report alleges, are making millions and relatively little goes to help people with cancer. And the funds keep spinning off new "charities" collecting more money and paying more huge salaries to relatives. The head of the charities responded to the charges, but even he admits that 80% of money collected through paid solicitors goes to the solicitors and, well, you can look at his article -- basically a softball piece -- and then go back and look at the Times article and draw your own conclusions. And then give to charities with less questionable practices. (Tampa Bay Times; WBIR-TV/Knoxville; Thanks to Frank Murphy at WWST (Star 102.1)/Knoxville for the link)
