Most Homes Around Here Don't Even Have Basements
-
When I first moved to Los Angeles, we rented a house in the gated, ultra-wealthy (no, REALLY ultra-wealthy, as in old-money billionaire) town of Rolling Hills (yes, the entire town is gated). We were not wealthy, far from it, but we got to live in a nice author's home until she sold it, and then we had to move down the hill to the ungated, less mega-wealthy adjacent town. Meanwhile, homes in Rolling Hills got more and more... well, here's the thing. They're all low-slung, one-story ranches with horse trails and pools and stuff. Nice enough, but what do you do if you want more, more, more? One guy's home looks like every other house in the town, but isn't: It goes five stories underground It's nearly 50,000 square feet on 8 acres. And it's for sale... for $53 MILLION. Ho. Lee. F. The article describes the splendor. If I had $53 million to... well, that'll never happen, so let's not even go there. (Los Angeles Times)
