Yet The State Has No Problem With The Lottery
-
A while ago, Florida had a statewide scandal involving 50 arrests for illegal internet gambling that led to the lieutenant governor's resignation. The legislature rushed to pass a law to prevent that from happening again, but, as it always seems to be, a rush to come up with a law created a very bad law. And as a result, the state has effectively banned sweepstakes held by legitimate nonprofits. In fact, an AARP sweepstakes has in the fine print that Florida residents can't enter. The sponsors of the bill in the Senate says that this was not the intent of the law, but they can't fix it until the next session of the Legislature, which isn't till next year. Sometimes, everybody needs to step back, take a deep breath, and craft legislation that makes sense instead of trying to be the first to get in front of the cameras waiting a piece of paper and claiming victory.
