So, the problem is, in some areas of the country, the ability to rise to a higher income level is substantially less likely than in others. They measured it by the percentages of kids who start in the bottom fifth, economically, and rise to the top fifth. It's easier in your New Yorks, your Bostons, even your L.A.s and San Franciscos and Houstons. Salt Lake City? Much easier, and then there's the south, where places like Charlotte and Atlanta and most of Mississippi are where you stay on the level on which you were born. Where you live can determine how upwardly mobile you are. But isn't that why people have left home and tried their luck elsewhere since modern society began? (New York Times)
