Nobody's Forcing You To Listen To Them
-
A musician and writer wrote this piece for the Washington Post the other week, basically saying that the Beatles were overrated and don't deserve the long-lasting accolades and devotion of their fans. In some ways, he's not incorrect: there were other bands were equally deserving of long-lasting support, for instance. But to say that they don't deserve the long-lasting support of the fans is to say that people shouldn't have the right to their own musical taste. There was no official government decision anointing the Beatles as spokesmen for a generation. And plenty of popular acts have fallen by the wayside in terms of popularity. The Beatles continue to be popular because a significant number of people like them. Is that so terrible? (Washington Post; Thanks to Brad Krantz at WBT/Charlotte for the link)
