Bearnado!
-
It's unclear whether the rise in the incidence of bear sightings in the suburbs is because of recordkeeping or has some greater meaning. But the number of incidents in 13 states with detailed recordkeeping shows a 23% increase from 2010 to 2012. That's almost 15,000 human-bear encounters. In Florida, it's up 47% in the same period. Are bears coming to get us now? Or are there environmental reasons the bears are leaving the woods? But if you're tired of waiting for the bears to come to you, you can always go on a hike in remote northern Labrador and get mauled by a polar bear when it attacks your tent, like this Maine lawyer. The park up in Labrador advises visitors to hire an armed Inuit polar bear guard when they hike and camp, but this guy didn't do that. Didn't end well. Maybe the guard should be mandatory. Or maybe you shouldn't hike and camp in bear territory. (USA Today; CBC)
