The Biggest Freak Yet In A Place Full Of Them
-
I guess we'll find out more soon about why someone plowed his car through crowds on the Venice beach boardwalk at high speed, killing one and injuring at least a dozen. Whatever the reason, it's the kind of incident that makes you feel unsafe anywhere. I mean, the Venice walk -- there is no actual boardwalk, by the way, but it's the stretch you always see on TV, with Muscle Beach and vendors and freaks, and it's a popular tourist attraction -- is just someplace where that kind of mayhem seems a little more of a violation, because... why? I don't know, but it does. This kind of thing can happen anywhere, right? So why does this one seem especially outrageous and violative? Because it's a familiar, usually benign location? Because it's local? Because we've been there? (Los Angeles Times)
