It is truly eerie to read the final posts of Martin Manley, the former Kansas City Star sportswriter and inventor of the NBA Efficiency Index, who committed suicide and left a detailed website about it that he created before he died and which will remain in place, prepaid, until 2018. He meticulously, obsessively planned his death down to every detail, and he was not in bad health and claimed not to be depressed. He said he just didn't want to decline, and he feared what he felt was an imminent and unavoidable collapse of the economy into chaos. It's all as matter-of-fact as you'd expect from a statistics freak, and chilling in how sure he was that what he was doing made perfect, rational sense. (Kansas City Star)
