If You Can't Have Wacky Politics When You're Young, When CAN You...
-
The man who is likely to be the next mayor of New York was, in his youth, a leftist supporter of the Sandinistas. He occasionally refers to those days as youthful idealism, but in his 20s, he was pretty far left, out on the fringe. The question is, do you hold his views as a young adult against him now? Which positions are forgivable later? Obviously, you wouldn't elect somebody who was a Nazi, but the kind of politics that you acquire when you're in college or just starting out tend to be more extreme than you practice later in life. Can you assume that those views still play a role in someone's life many years later? (New York Times)
