Today's Lesson -- The Definition Of Overreaching
-
The problem I have with zero-tolerance rules at schools is that when they're enforced too harshly, the administrators stick to the line that they have to enforce the rules evenly, while it's a child's future at stake. The administration's procedural concerns shouldn't punish a kid forever for what might be a stupid, minor mistake. In this case, a kid is facing expulsion for shooting an Airsoft gun in his own yard. He was playing with friends in the yard while they waited for the school bus, but they never went to the bus stop and never left the private property. Nevertheless, the school is suspending the kids for something they didn't even do in school. A neighbor called 911 on them, and zero tolerance kicked in. But this is a case of the school intruding on the lives of children outside of school property, the school day, and even public property. This is going right into the home. And it doesn't make sense in another way: the 911 caller didn't even think the gun was real, but called anyway. (WAVY-TV/Norfolk)
