If He'd Had A Joy Buzzer, They'd Have Sentenced Him To Death
-
You might recall the story we had last January about a kid who got suspended and branded a "weapons offender" for possessing a novelty shock pen, the kind that gives you a little buzz when you press the cap, at school. How something that can't even hurt you is considered a weapon is hard to imagine, but that's what the school system did. And now, the second-grader and his family are suing the district in federal court, saying that its weapons policy is unconstitutional. This is yet another case in which school officials refused to exercise common sense, and instead stick to a zero tolerance policy that just makes them look stupid. Surely, it makes no sense to treat a buzzer pen in exactly the same way that you would treat a semi automatic weapon. And, surely, it's ridiculous to permanently market the kid's record as a weapons offender for something like this. (Philly.com)
