If You Don't Pay Up, We Can Always Just Knock You Out Again
-
Guy fell in a bathroom and hit his head. 12 days later, he woke up in the Mayo Clinic's Arizona facility, having been taken there by an ambulance. And he was handed a $150,000 hospital bill. Turns out his insurer refused to pay because the hospital was out-of-network. Here's the thing: You have insurance, you assume that in an emergency, you don't have to worry about which hospital takes what insurance. And if you're UNCONSCIOUS, you can't tell the EMTs where to go. The insurer eventually, after pressure from a TV news consumer reporter, agreed to pay, but it's a cautionary tale -- you could be stuck with a bill you didn't even consent to, just because your life was in danger.
