Wait, Which Team Is Which? Can't Tell Anymore
-
Used to be, you knew sports teams instantly by their uniforms and colors. White at home, grey or solid color on the road, same color scheme. Now, teams wear countless designs in the same season, like Oregon's football team with several different designs, not always in the team's green and gold colors. The Miami Heat will wear nine different uniforms this season, some with gold, which is not one of their official colors. I watched the University of Miami play in dark grey uniforms - again, not their color. And sometimes both teams wear colors that are similar, like when the Knicks broke out their horrific orange unis against the Hawks, who wore red. Never mind that when teams wear uniforms where the numbers are the same color as the fabric, you can't even read them. Why do this? Well, one theory is that changing uniforms matches the short attention span of the fans, but I prefer the theory that it's all about merchandising. More unis mean more things to sell as "authentic." And that means nothing if you don't win. (New York Times)
