Free Ride, Over

The Los Angeles Metro subway system used to have an honor system- you were supposed to buy a ticket, but you could get through the turnstiles without one, and they rarely checked. When someone realized that, they decided to lock the turnstiles and make people swipe their tickets to get to the trains. And turnstile counts plummeted, although the transit system claims that ridership increased. (Sure it did.) This is, sadly, evidence that there is no honor out there. Give people the choice of cheating or being honest, and... well... yeah. (Los Angeles Times)
